Artist’s Statement

Knitting is often seen as an old constructive craft technique which was used to create garments and blankets for practical use. My work uses the technique in more creative way, to make work that is made in both response and to alleviate the anxiety attacks I suffer from. The repetition of knitting on oversized handmade needles produces large open nets which tower high above the viewer. They are stretched and set in paint, that both conceals and celebrates the yarn and the structure of knitting. The textiles sculptures are stripped of their natural material properties when they are submerged in the paint. Focusing on colour, the work is eye-catching and draws the viewer in to walk up to, around and through the work, this naturally creates movement in the work as they are floating from the ceiling.
